What we collect
Open Sources does not require an account and does not collect your name, email address, or any personally identifiable information. Two anonymous, browser-generated identifiers are used to make the site's interactive features work:
Site visit counter
When you first visit the site, a random session ID is generated and stored in your browser's sessionStorage. This ID is sent to our server once per session to increment the visit counter shown in the footer.
- The session ID is random and contains no personal information.
- It is deleted automatically when you close your browser tab.
- We store only the total visit count — not individual session IDs.
Community favorites (stars)
When you star an app, a random visitor ID is generated and stored in your browser's localStorage. This ID is used to prevent the same browser from casting duplicate votes.
- The visitor ID is random and contains no personal information.
- It persists in your browser until you clear your browser data.
- We store which tool IDs each visitor ID has starred, to prevent duplicate votes. We do not store browsing history or link visitor IDs to any identity.
- You can clear your starred apps at any time by clearing your browser's localStorage.
App submissions and issue reports
Submissions sent through the "Submit an App" and "Report an Issue" forms are delivered to our private inbox for review. They are not published automatically. We may use the information you provide to update the directory, but we will not share it publicly without your permission.
Analytics and advertising
Open Sources uses Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site, and Google AdSense to display ads that help keep the directory free. These services may set their own cookies. You can opt out of Google Analytics using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
